The Northcenter Chamber of Commerce will honor those who have served in our Armed Forces at our annual Veteran's Day Commemorative Ceremony at the North Center Senior Satellite Center, 4040 N. Oakley, November 11th at 11 a.m. The ceremony begins with the presentation of the colors by the Lake View High School ROTC Color Guard. New this year, local singer Frances Strain will perform an a cappella rendition of the National Anthem. Many of the military men and women of the Tattler Post #973 American Legion and other local military personnel will be in uniform to proudly salute their country's flag. Read more

This month, one of Northcenter's most beautiful homes will be part of an initiative to provide a safe place for Chicago's children. Meet Gracious House, a new project from award-winning Chicago interior designer M. Grace Sielaff of M. Grace designs. After spending time abroad and seeing firsthand the effects of extreme poverty, child labor and abuse, Grace sought to apply what she saw to making a difference back home. With Gracious House, she is combining her passion for design with a drive to promote safe, healthy children and families. A team of top Chicago-based interior designers and design industry professionals create show-house projects and host open houses to raise funds for local organizations working on the ground to prevent child abuse, support family education and intervention and more. With our August business luncheon, we're going back-to-school! This month, get up close and personal with your local neighborhood school administrators and education experts. We'll be talking about education issues in the community and ways that local schools and local businesses, two vital forces in any neighborhood, can come together and support one another. By now, you have probably seen a number of emails, Facebook posts and tweets from us discussing the reconstitution of Special Service Area #38 Northcenter. For those that may still have questions, we wanted to provide some information about what the SSA is, what it does and why the renewal of its funding is important. Special Service Area #38 was created in 2006 to provide enhanced cleaning, landscaping, snow removal and other services on Northcenter's primary streets and to help contribute to the vibrancy, appeal and identity of Northcenter for residents, workers and visitors. It's the kind of story that can break your heart, especially around the holidays-a man in the community, a veteran, is on the verge of getting evicted. He's having trouble making ends meet due to the intense cost of recent medical bills. It's a story we hear all too often. Luckily, unlike so many versions of this story, this one has a happy ending. The man got in touch with Scott Best and Caitlin Sammons at Common Pantry, who launched a crowdfunding page for him through a site called Benevolent. "Within a week, we had raised enough for a month's rent and bus cards so he could go to job fairs," says Sammons, the Program Manager for Common Pantry. "The community responded to him so quickly." Not only was he able to stay in his apartment, but he found a part-time job and is now living self-sufficiently. Read more
