Total Football… Take a Spin Around The Globe

Stuart Johnston and Jamie Hale have brought an international experience to Northcenter in the nearly 6-year-old Globe Pub. The Globe is located at 1934 W. Irving Park Road. In a city where you can find sports bars everywhere, it’s the UK Pub atmosphere and the authentic crowd that sets The Globe apart.

“Northcenter is a diverse neighborhood and we get customers from all over the world—England, Ireland, Honduras, Brazil, Australia, Africa, all over,” says Johnston. “You can get the sports bar experience anywhere but to share it with people from all over the world, that’s unique.”

The secret to their success, and world following, may be their commitment to the international sports scene. If you’re looking for English Premiership Football (Soccer), rugby, Australian Rules Football, cricket, you’ll find it all and more. With Direct TV, Dish Network, Comcast and a special international satellite, there’s something for every sports fanatic, including NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB and a variety of college ball, of course.

Food choices range from American favorites to tempting offerings from across the pond.

“Our hamburgers and quesadillas are very popular but we also offer shepherds pie, steak and ale pie, fish and chips and many other dishes,” says Johnston.

Salads, sandwiches of all kinds, wraps, complete dinners and homemade soups round out the menu. If you’re looking for something to wash down your meal, or just to drink for the sake of drinking, you’ll find a dizzying array of beers from all over the world. With 20 rotating tap beers and over 200 bottled beers, you can travel the world without leaving the comfort of your barstool. And it’s good to know that if you want to come back the next day, breakfast is served until 2:00 p.m.

You don’t have to be a sports fan to enjoy all that The Globe has to offer. The large back bar area features live music, open mic comedy, Beer School, Retro DJ Night, and every Tuesday is Quiz Night, one of the best in the city according to Chicago Magazine. Other upcoming events include a book signing and a movie premiere. The Globe also hosts golf outings and provides luxury coach transportation to all Chicago Fire Games, just $15 for safe transport and refreshment.  Check out www.theglobepub.com for all the event details.

“It’s a real community, our regular customers and new customers alike feel at home here. We often get tourists stopping by who are visiting Chicago and need a taste of home,” says Johnston. “We are very happy we found a home for The Globe in Northcenter. The neighborhood is very friendly and the perfect spot for us.”

All the schedules, events, food and beverage options can be found at www.theglobepub.com.  Or better yet, just stop in for a pint the next time you walk by.

Three Sisters Express Creativity ... and Espresso, Too!

Espresso Thy Art Café, owned by Rossana Reformado, Marissa McCormack and Virginia Castro, opened its doors in May in the space once occupied by Balingit Bakery. With their first summer behind them, the business is on its way.  It’s a venture that would make their father, owner of Balingit Bakery, proud. Rossana, the resident artist, explained, “He wanted to retire and suggested I use the space as a gallery but I really wasn’t comfortable taking on a gallery. So we came up with the concept of a café that showcases the work of local artists. “

espresso CAFE

It seems the community has embraced the concept. Espresso Thy Art is holding its own despite being located just across the street from a rather formidable coffee competitor.

If you haven’t stopped by Espresso The Art, the environment is warm and inviting. You will find the café bustling with morning commuters or buzzing with moms and tots later in the day, yet you can always find a corner to relax.  There are also local business types stopping by for lunch, and the ever-present wifi seekers with their head in a laptop.

“We really want people to feel at home. We become friends with our customers.  And, it’s a great place to find out about events and happenings in the neighborhood!” says Marissa. In the warmer months the huge back patio boasts ample seating and a beautiful flower, herb and vegetable garden. It also features a playhouse popular with the youngsters. “We have customers from all over. I think they appreciate an independent, family owned business.” Marissa adds.

Take your shot, americano or latte (no drip coffee served here), and wander to the back of the space and you will find a wide array of local craftsmanship.  Browse the unique photography, original paintings, jewelry, stationery and small collectibles. Now is an especially great time to visit and find something uniquely local for the holidays. Chances are you won’t find it anywhere else. The art rotates, so visit often for new inspiration.

Typically you’ll find Virginia working behind the counter and despite the tiny kitchen, they produce a variety of crepes, pastries, smoothies, teas and of course, the espresso, custom made from a special roast. “Depending on the season you’ll see some changes in the menu but we try to focus on the freshest, seasonal ingredients and start creating from there.”  For those of you missing the Ensaymada, the Filipino pastry that made Balingit Bakery famous, the sisters have the secret family recipe and they’re not afraid to use it.

Always a good Northcenter neighbor, Espresso Thy Art has hosts a number of events including the recent Chicago Firefighter Calendar Preview benefiting the Ignite the Spirit Fund. The space is available for gatherings of all kinds. Giving back to the Northcenter community is an important aspect of the business. The sisters grew up here and are now raising their own families in the area.  Visit www.espressotheyart.blogspot.com for the latest on events and happenings at the cafe.

Creative expression comes in many forms at Espresso Thy Art Café. Whether the art is on the wall, on the plate, or in a demitasse, it’s a comforting presence in Northcenter.

Did you know the first Ace Hardware store was in Northcenter?

"In 1924, Steve’s grandfather, William, banded together with three other independent store owners to form Ace Hardware Corporation as a way to gain the buying power necessary to compete with the larger catalog and department stores. From this small group, who owned just five local Chicago stores, Ace has grown to 4,500 affiliate stores nationwide."
